Mt. Pisah Missionary Baptist Church @2020
Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church History
God began to move upon the hearts of the former slaves in the Stringtown community to organize a church they could call their own. In 1882, God spoke to the hearts of
Mrs. Ackrey and Mr. Andrew Smith and caused them to donate this spot of land to those former slaves and Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church was established.
The Mt. Pisgah Church building has always stood on this ground, although it has been destroyed twice. The building that was torn down in November 2013 was built under
the leadership of Reverend John Burney with the assistance of Pastor Joe Ewing, Brother Thomas Moss and many others. Under the leadership of Pastor Thomas Ligon,
Jr. a fellowship hall was added .
Over the years, records have been destroyed, but we know that the following men of God served as shepherds of the flock at Mt. Pisgah: Reverend John Burney; Reverend
C. P. Long came to the flock in 1942 and served until 1950; Reverend L. D. Fort replaced Pastor Long and pastured for the next 24 years; Reverend Ledford Jones led the
congregation from 1974 until 1980 and established Mt. Pisgah as a full time church.
Reverend Billy C. Everett served as Pastor from 1980 until 1981. Mt. Pisgah continued to grow spiritually and financially under the leadership of Reverend Herman Scott,
who accepted Pastorate in November of 1987.
On November 8, 1987, Brother John W. Ewing was licensed to Preach the Gospel, and served as Associate Minister under the leadership of Reverend Herman Scott.
Reverend Scott served until October 7, 1990, when he was called to active duty with the U. S. Army. Reverend John Ewing was ordained October 6, 1990 and served as
Interim Pastor until he was elected and installed as Pastor on January 26, 1992.
In 1995, Reverend Henry Holmes and Reverend Carlos Roman joined the flock as Associate Ministers to help lift up the Word of God. Reverend Ewing served as Pastor
until February 1997.
Mt. Pisgah held on to the faith that God would send another shepherd to lead his flock. During that time span, Reverend Charles Miller came aboard as an Associate
Minister.
Reverend Henry Holmes served as Interim Pastor and was installed as Pastor on June 21, 1998. Under his leadership, the church’s structure improved tremendously. With
the help of Reverend Carlos Roman and Reverend Charles Miller the church continued to grow. Reverend Holmes served asPastor for two years until his death in July
2000. Reverend Carlos Roman became Interim Pastor, leading the flock until June 2001.
On July 7, 2001, God sent another shepherd to lead his flock, Reverend Lucius Q. Smith. Pastor Smith was installed on September 30, 2001 and is currently serving with
new hopes and visions for this church. Pastor Smith is feeding the flock with the wisdom and understanding of God’s Word, along with a bit of humor and real life
experiences.
Reverend William Johnson joined our flock and became an Associate Minister in 2009. He delights the congregation with words of wisdom and humor. In 2010, Sister
Linda Frederick and Sister Mashona Ward were appointed Financial Secretaries, the Trustee Board was established and a Children’s Bible Study was formed under the
leadership of Sister Pat Smith. The Women’s Ministry was established in March of 2012, and the Men’s Ministry formed in 2014. Reverend William Bryles joined in 2014
and has provided faithful assistance to the Pastor.
Pastor Smith presented a “Five Phase” approach to build a new sanctuary. The Mt. Pisgah congregation marched into their new sanctuary on June 1, 2014.
